Build A Modern HyperScale Storage Infrastructure Using QCT Platforms

QCT (Quanta Cloud Technology), advanced hardware and integrated systems provider to cloud datacenters worldwide, offers a fully integrated and rigorously tested Hyperconverged reference architectures, based on the x86 server platform and powered by EMC’s ScaleIO software defined storage, provide server-based SAN from local application server storage to deliver elastic and scalable performance and capacity on demand. ScaleIO converges storage and compute resources, scaling to thousands of nodes. As an alternative to a traditional SAN infrastructure, ScaleIO combines HDDs, SSDs, and PCIe flash cards to create a virtual pool of block storage with varying performance tiers. As storage and compute resources change, ScaleIO software automatically rebalances the storage distribution to optimize performance and capacity usage.

ScaleIO creates a software-defined storage environment that allows you to exploit the unused local storage capacity in your servers for a scalable, high performance distributed shared storage system that is fault tolerant. ScaleIO, with its rich set of features, is ideally suited for virtual storage infrastructure, databases, development and testing, and virtual desktop infrastructure—environments with increasing demand for scale and performance.

CONVERGENCE

ScaleIO converges storage and compute resources into a single-layer architecture, aggregating capacity and I/O performance and simplifying management. With ScaleIO, storage is just another application running alongside other applications, and each server is a building block for the global storage and compute cluster. ScaleIO enables the IT administrator to singlehandedly manage the entire data center stack, improving operational effectiveness and lowering operational costs. Furthermore, ScaleIO reduces power, cooling, and space requirements and eliminates the need for dedicated storage components—reducing TCO by over 60 percent.

SCALABILITY

ScaleIO is designed to massively scale from three to thousands of nodes. Whenever the need arises, additional storage and compute resources (i.e., additional servers and drives) can be added. Storage and compute resources grow together so the balance between them is maintained. Storage growth is therefore always automatically aligned with application needs.

ELASTICITY

With ScaleIO, capacity and compute can be increased or decreased whenever the need arises. The system automatically rebalances data “on the fly” with no downtime. Additions and removals can be done in small or large increments. No capacity planning or complex reconfiguration due to interoperability constraints is required—reducing complexity and cost. ScaleIO can be used with mixed server brands, operating systems (physical and virtual), and storage media types (HDDs, SSDs, and PCIe flash cards). A ScaleIO environment can be comprised of any mix of the above.

PERFORMANCE

With ScaleIO, all I/O is aggregated and made accessible to any application within the cluster. All servers participate in servicing I/O requests using massively parallel processing. Unlike most traditional storage systems, as the number of servers grows, so do throughput and IOPS—eliminating bottlenecks. Performance scales linearly and cost/performance rates improve with growth. Performance optimization is automatic; whenever rebuilds and rebalances are needed, they occur in the background with minimal or no impact to running applications. For performance management, manual tiering can be designed using storage pools. A designated performance tier can be created using low-latency, high-bandwidth flash media and low-cost spinning disks can be used to create a designated capacity tier.
